The Impacts of Ballot Measure 1

Ballot Measure 1 would limit economic growth, increase the cost of goods and services, and make Alaska an even more expensive place to live and do business. The measure, written and funded by Outsiders, disproportionately impacts Alaskan-owned small businesses. We can’t afford California and Washington’s bad ideas. On November 5th, Vote No on 1.

Sick Leave

  • Introduces mandatory paid sick leave regardless business type or size.

  • Requires sick leave roll-over even if the individual isn’t continually employed by the business.

  • Introduces vague and overly broad definitions of what constitutes sick leave.

Minimum Wage & Tips

  • Increases Alaska’s minimum wage by more than $3 over the next 3 years.

  • Tips can’t be included when calculating wages.

Freedom of Speech

  • Limits employers’ and managers’ first amendment rights as it relates to religious and political/regulatory matters.

Fiscal Impacts

  • The Wage and Hour section of Labor Standards anticipates 20-25 inquiries against Alaska employers each week if Ballot Measure 1 passes. The state anticipates extensive audits of employer policies and accrual rates if Ballot Measure 1 passes. The state will seek resolution of complaints through civil court.
